Sunday WRC 2 in Mexico: Two in a row for Tidemand

Super Swede Pontus Tidemand claimed his second consecutive WRC 2 victory at Rally Guanajuato Mexico on Sunday to take sole command of the championship.

After fighting tooth and nail with Eric Camilli since Thursday night’s start, Tidemand pulled clear of the Frenchman in today’s final two gravel speed tests to win by 42.7sec in a Skoda Fabia R5.

His victory follows success on home ground last month. After being tied for the series lead with Andreas Mikkelsen going into the event, he now has a clear eight point lead over Camilli.

Tidemand and Camilli could barely be split yesterday as they traded tenths of a second, the Skoda man ending the day 2.0sec ahead of the Ford Fiesta R5 pilot.

Camilli was unable to replicate yesterday’s pace. His Fiesta was equipped with a wet road set-up which proved unsuitable as the unpredictable weather stayed dry, and a broken anti-roll bar also slowed him.

“That was a fantastic battle and a fantastic rally,” said Tidemand. “Today I had a strategy to push on the first stage and it worked. This is a really good start to the season but Eric was very fast all weekend and it wasn’t easy.”

Mexico’s Benito Guerra finished third in another Fabia R5, 7min 46.1sec behind Camilli, with Chile’s Pedro Heller completing the finishers in fourth.
