What should have been just a KZN Regional/Club Karting event, was more like a mini national with competitors travelling from Northern Regions and Western Cape to get in some practice before the Idube track closes for the 1st round of the SARMC National in two weeks’ time. But the KZN boys kept the banner flying high, by clinching five overall wins out of six for the day, with Charl Visser from Cape Town taking the Junior Max Class. The 2018 Rotax Max Northern Regions Karting Championship exploded into action at a dramatic and eventful opening round at the Zwartkops International Kart Track on Saturday with a few surprise results, some expected outcomes and plenty action both on and off the Pretoria racetrack.
British driver Ben Hanley, driving the new Drago Corse chassis, took his fourth victory at the Winter Cup on the weekend. Hanley beat home Anthony Abbasse (Sodikart-TM) and Fabian Federer (CRG-TM) in a mammoth 94-kart KZ2 field. Of the three Australians competing, James Wharton and Joshua Fife both made their Finals.
Rotax entered the tyre market in 2005 with a hard compound, the durable Mojo D1 tyre for all classes to reduce the tyre costs – a very significant cost in karting. The very successful D2 followed and is still serving Junior Max and the Clubmans classes very well. The premier classes demanded higher performance tyres, thus the quest for good performance and tyre longevity – two things that often seem mutually exclusive – is the ongoing challenge.
